Here is a discussion of balance and individual health that will hopefully help people understand the individual and give some insight as to how to bring individuals peak energy out. What I am going to describe is a model of behaviors, behaviors that reflect on the personality and health of the individual. There are two facets of this model, the first is an inner/outer focus and the second is likened to a coil moving through time, which I also describe as one dimensional, or three dimensional, use of our personalities. The inner/outer focus is best described by understanding that there is an infinite world of experiences available to each of us. On the outer side, there are books, video, sports, arts, relationships, dancing, exercise, cooking, sciences and adventures of all types for us to engage ourselves in and in which there is a sense of discovery and of pushing further out into the world in order to sample what the world has to offer and to make friends of all types. On the inner side, there is meditation, prayer, intuition, creativity, peace, compassion, understanding, feelings, inspiration, harmony and love for other people and for our natural home.  The same sense of discovery applies for people who enjoy looking ever further into the world on the inside of ourselves. The first premise which I would like to offer is that people need to grow.  Growth occurs by the individual pushing inward/outward with a sense of discovery that is sometimes referred to as lifelong learning. What I have found to be true is that for a person to be able to push further outside, they need to have a corresponding push inside.  Take the example of the first time you jumped of a 40 ft. high dive.  This was a new experience that you wanted to try, and you probably stood on the edge of that platform reaching further inside of yourself for more courage and faith.  Once you had pushed your inner limits, then you were prepared to push the outer ones, and you jumped.  Splash!  Oh wow! The same is true for a person who wants to push further inside.  That person would be best advised to increase the amount and variety of their outer experiences and to live them from the start as if they are meant to be a learning experience.  This means doing something new and witnessing how you are when you are doing this new thing.  You see, results that we generate in the world are the only true evidence we really have for finding out who we are as individuals.  We might want to purposely expand our types of adventures, just so we can see how we are in a new experience.  An amazing thing sometimes occurs when we study the results that we get, an A-ha!  Oh wow! This is my description of what relates to the introverted and extroverted personality types.  Also here is the point about achieving a balance between the two types and including them both in your life in order to achieve the most discovery and adventure that life has the potential to grant you.  Using introspection to develop your activities and using activities to develop your introspection. In the representation of this model on paper, this aspect of our personality is drawn as a zigzagging line inside of a coil.  The coil itself is what I'd like to describe next. The coil is a symbol of the well-rounded personality, the three dimensional behavior moving through time.  Since we are reading this, we are doing something visual, that is one of the three types, doing/visual.  If we were instead listening to this, we would be using relating/auditory.  If we were dancing, we would be using feeling/kinesics. These are common personality types/learning styles that I think form a very useful model of the typical ways that we tend to use our time and to experience our worlds. An unhealthy person tends to get stuck in a one dimensional behavior style.  Their self-esteem limits them to only seeing themselves a certain way and hence they only view the world as being that way, reinforcing their view and creating habits or a rut for them to live in.  That rut corresponds to a straight line instead of a coil in the diagram.  Each of us tends to favor one personality type or learning style.  When we are healthy we are able to use the advantages of the other two styles and can create a versatile and well-rounded view of the world around us.  When we are not healthy, we tend to lock ourselves and others into a singular view.  This is why the term workaholic is considered unhealthy.  A workaholic who sings and dances would probably be considered healthy. The power behind this idea is that individuals or groups can structure their behaviors and activities in such a way as to attempt to achieve a balance for the individual of the three styles.  Each person’s balance would include a different mix of doing, relating and feeling, with some established minimum percent of their time going to all three.  Part of the reluctance people feel in making sales calls is the amount of personal energy that goes into relating constantly to others.  If this calling effort creates an imbalance for the individual then this person's energy level and efficiency goes down, i.e., they do less work. If we used a computer network as the basis of our work platform, we could begin to track what percentage mix people are using and correlate that back to their health and vitality, as well as their efficiency and productivity.  This is an example of a system design which generates information useful for positive reinforcement for the individual within a group. Each individual would have a three dimensional personality mix that would represent them at their healthiest.  That mix should be observed and the person matched to a function in the organization that matches their type of personality, where they can be happiest.  The purpose for doing this is to try to maximize the energy available to the organization in a natural and sustainable way. From that maximum energy platform it is then up to the organization to structure itself to use that energy as constructively as possible. Many organizations dissipate their available energy by not paying attention to function/personality matching, by wasting available energy on internal conflict or confusion, or by not having a basic sense of purpose or direction which would allow the combined group energy to find its focus. The premise that I'm working on here is that any group has only a limited pool of energy and resources upon which to draw in order to create it.  I'm assuming a non-exploiting approach where group members want to achieve their maximum result as a group and are not being coerced.  Then basically, what we are trying to do is to create systems by which the available energy and resources of the organization are focused out into the marketplace.  Concepts of needs-based or relationship selling, getting close to the customers, personal contact marketing, customer service focus or others are all examples of organizations trying to direct their available energies outside of their own organization.
